Burma: A Soldier's Campaign in 20 Objects - David Meara - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Captain John Alexander served in the Royal Engineers and was posted to the 17th Indian Division, known as the Black Cats, which was sent into Burma against the Japanese as part of the 14th Army. John’s unit was 60 Indian Field Company. After the capture of Hong Kong and the fall of Singapore in February 1942 the Japanese army advanced into Burma, catching the Allies ill-equipped and unprepared. Rangoon fellin March, thus beginning a long fighting retreat by the Allies through thick jungle to the northwest frontier with India. But the Allies regrouped and fought back, and in 1944 fierce fighting, culminating in the battles of the Admin Box, Kohima and Imphal, caused the Japanese forces to begin to withdraw. At the beginning of 1945 the 14th Army launched a successful offensive pushing the Japanese southwards before them. Mandalay was retaken and then Rangoon in May 1945. The Japanese Army finally surrendered on 15 August 1945.Many histories of the Burma Campaign have been written, and the terrible conditions of jungle warfare against a brutal enemy are well known. John Alexander returned home on leave before the end of the conflict with his body weakened by fever, jungle sores and dysentery, and his mind affected by what we now call PTSD. But he also brought back with him a collection of ‘souvenirs’ from the campaign – artefacts that range from Japanese currency and cigarettes to letters, swords, a bayonet, sketches, and his own diaries, letters and decorations. This book will be a reflection on the personal stories behind this terrible and often forgotten war, looking at the conflict both from a British and a Japanese perspective. Through an examination of these artefacts, the horror and humanity of the combatants who took part in this far-away conflict will be vividly brought to life.

Let''s get down to the facts: each entry in this astonishing list begins with a number of bullet points, detailing the name of the treasure trove, the rough date it was supposedly last accounted for, its last recorded location, its contents and an estimation of value. So we find that on 20 November 1511 the Portuguese ship the ''Flor de la Mar'' disappeared in the Straits of Malacca. On board? Well amongst other trinkets, about 55 thousand kilos of gold bullion. Estimated worth of the whole cargo today? Over £2 billion. Does the treasure lie in the murky waters of the Straits - or was it stolen by Afonso de Albuquerque, the man who added Malacca to the Portuguese Empire? The Kruger Bullion is a treasure that was allegedly hidden at the request of the South African President Paul Kruger (1883-1902) to ensure it didn’t fall into British hands during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). In 1947, Mr H. Lessing found a portion of the treasure near the Eswatini border, equidistant from Pretoria and Maputo, Mozambique, after following a map within a Bible given him by his father. The hoard was described as ''broken ammunition boxes filled with Kruger sovereigns, other coins and rotting Kruger bank notes''. But that doesn''t account for much of the £250 million that went missing. It''s not just gold of course. There are Faberge eggs out there, and Michelangelo''s marble mask of the head of a faun...

Spitfire Deserter? - Bill Simpson - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Spitfire Deserter? - Bill Simpson - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

In the early morning of 20 April 1942, forty-seven Spitfire Vs of 601 and 603 Squadrons of the Auxiliary Air Force launched from the deck of the American aircraft carrier the USS Wasp, which had sailed to a position north of Algiers. The planes were bound for Malta. At the time, the island was under heavy siege by Axis forces. Salvatore Walcott’s Spitfire never made it; he crash-landed in North Africa, part of Vichy France, and was interned. After attempting to escape, Walcott was liberated at the end of 1942. He returned to the UK and joined the US Army Air Corps and continued to serve as a pilot until the end of the war and afterwards with the USAF during the Berlin airlift. These are the bare bones of the story. But was that landing in Africa ‘an inexplicable defection’, as it has been described? Here is the evidence, alongside an exploration of American and British attitudes to men like Walcott who served under foreign flags. Walcott’s story has been discussed for many years, but here is the truth. Did the Spitfire’s undercarriage fail to retract, as Walcott claimed, or did he lose his nerve? Does the fact that Walcott later gained a reputation as a risk-taker indicate a ‘Lord Jim’ narrative, whereby he tried to make up for a moment of cowardice? Walcott''s ultimately tragic tale is set against the larger narrative of Irish/American and British/Vichy France relations, of the Mediterranean theatre, aircraft design, and the US entry into the war.

The First Showman - Karl Shaw - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The First Showman is a hugely entertaining history of the man who created the modern circus: Philip Astley. There have been many books about aspects of the circus but little written about its inventor. Here, New York Times bestselling author Karl Shaw draws on original research to tell the story of Britain’s Barnum. He brilliantly evokes the time, the place, the drama, pitfalls, successes, characters and passion behind Astley’s rise to fame. Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, ‘Mr Astley’ is also a local hero for the author, who now lives there.Astley served as a sergeant major in the British Army where he learned his horse-riding skills, before becoming a brilliant innovator of equestrian tricks and spectacles. In April 1768 Astley staked out a ring at Halfpenny Hatch near Waterloo in London and he and his wife Patty put on displays of trick horse-riding in the open air. Two years later, he put a clown in the ring and gave birth to the modern circus. His circus performers included a strongman called Signor Colpi and a clown called Mr Merryman. He established the still-standard diameter of the circus ring, 42 feet. He was invited to perform before European royalty and built France’s first purpose-built circus building, the Amphitheatre Anglais, in Paris. Almost incredibly, he built circuses in twenty European cities. At home, Astley’s Amphitheatre was mentioned in books by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. He died on 20 October 1814 and was buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. His life is a wonderful story of perseverance and flair on the way to achieving everlasting renown.

Time and Tide - Jack Gaster - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Joseph John William Gaster (Jack), was born within the chimes of the Bow Bells in August 1923. A true cockney who grew up with a love for the water, gaining an apprenticeship for the Worshipful Company of Watermen and Lightermen when only a few days past his 14th birthday. Virtually his whole working life was on the River Thames, working on tugs from those early days as a 14-year-old apprentice, through the war, the post-war decline for the London docks, joining the police to serve 24 years as a Police Officer, (22 in Thames Division) then eight years piloting the scientifc launch for Thames Water. At the age of 64 Jack set up his own business, still on that boat for Thames Water, with his wife Phyllis as book-keeper and a grandson as apprentice after a while. In his 55 years of work, some 49 were on the River. His time away from the Thames was mainly in Royal Navy, where he became on of the youngest ever sub-lieutenants in the Commandos, in preparation for the D-Day landings, where he was assistant Beachmaster at Arromanches , where the biggest temporary harbor was built, he was still only 20-years-old. After the Normandy invasion, Jack joined the Rescue Tug Service, mainly on an ocean going tug, called the Enigma, including a tow of a floating dock from Scotland to Singapore. Jack has an absolute passion for the Thames, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the buildings and structures alongside it. In his latter years he had the pleasure of meeting heads of state from this and other countries, enthralling them with his insight of the Thames.
